QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.

17 January

I'm posting a video of the song I told you about in class today. It's not the kind of music you are used to but please give it a try, it's so powerful...
"Strange Fruit" is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who released her first recording of it in 1939, the year she first sang it. Written by the jewish high school teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem, it condemned American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans. Such lynchings had occurred chiefly in the South but also in all other regions of the United States.

Strange Fruit
Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh!
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
13 January

Next Monday it's Martin Luther King Day in the USA. To celebrate it I want you to read my last blog post about him and watch the video of his "I Have A Dream" Speech.

Then do this activity:
Before the Boycott Travel back in time and play the role of a school newspaper reporter assigned to ride the Montgomery, Alabama bus system in 1955. Learn  what it was like to ride the bus as an African American during that period in history.  Complete the seven-stop Montgomery bus ride and at the end of the assignment, you will be asked to describe how you felt about the bus tour.

We'll have a quiz on Friday!!
